I have spent the last two days in rooms with over 500 humans whose whole mission is to assist victims of family violence and sexual assault and abuse. The most amazing part was the commonality among everyone there:
Every step is driven by the families they serve and every family has a choice in how things go forward.
These people work tirelessly to re-engineer processes within law enforcement, the court system, the medical field and advocacy groups in order to more efficiently and safely handle the cases that come from family violence and sexual assault and abuse.
Their mission isn’t to just handle the crisis, but to do everything within their power to follow the victims through life to eliminate the risk of re-victimization.
As a survivor, I know how important these things are and I am so excited to have found this community. If your town doesn’t have a Family Justice Center, or if you are not sure whether they do or not, I encourage you to begin to ask questions.
In Prince George’s County, MD, their center reduced domestic violence deaths from 35 a year to 1. This is for a population of over 1 million people. Following victims after the crisis is the best outcome for the community at large.
I am so thankful for Sara Schanck and One Safe Place that allowed me to attend this event. I am even more excited for Macon’s opportunity to move forward with this type of resource.
