I spend a lot of time talking about how you need to "Compete With Yesterday You," but I don't want that to give the impression that we should be down on Yesterday You. Sometimes Yesterday You sets Today You up for success.
I woke up this morning and realized that I had accomplished a feat that is so rare for me. I had put clothes in the dryer, but I had not washed clothes. See, I HATE being obligated to do something. I like choosing to do things. So, when Yesterday You assumes that Today You is going to put things in the dryer, it makes me angry.
Today Me was thrilled with Yesterday Me. The thing is, I was much more motivated to do the rest of my laundry because it was my choice. Yesterday Me was KILLING IT!
So, today, I have to figure out how to do better than that. It will be hard. But, I also spent time to say thank you to the me from yesterday that understood what I needed to be productive today.
Even within the competition to be better, we have to acknowledge how our past selves hung on and got us to our present self. We also need to be aware that our present self can make it harder or easier for our future self. I choose easier. At least today, I do. We'll see how tomorrow goes.
